SMITH, Gilbert E. (1948 – 2019)
Mr. Gilbert E. Smith, 70, of Jarvis, passed away Friday afternoon, August 16, 2019 at the Greg and Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center in Hazard. He was the son of the late Jeff and Anna Mae Smallwood Smith born on December 16, 1948 in Clay County.
Gilbert was a former painter with Treadway Brothers and a member of the Heritage of Truth. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, camping and spending time with his family. He faithfully served his country in the United Sates Army.
On July 9, 1971, he united in marriage with Darlene Elliott and to this union five children were born.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Myrtle Smith and four brothers, Donald, Ronnie, Russell and Arthur Smith.
Survivors include his loving wife, Darlene Smith of Jarvis; five children, Robert Shane Smith of Jarvis, Kimberly Winkler and husband, Chris, and Gilbert Ellis Smith Jr. all of Barbourville, Christopher Smith and Holly Griffith both of Jarvis; three sisters, Sophie Kwasniewski of London, Shirley Hunter and husband, Roger, of California and Bobbie Smith of Barbourville; three brothers, Earl Smith and wife, Eve, of Barbourville, Glen Smith of Colorado and Junior Smith and wife, Joyce, of London; 11 grandchildren, Hope Phipps and husband, Michael, Timorthy Willis, Justin Smith, Todd Smith, Madison Smith, Hunter Griffith, Khloe Griffith, Lillie Mullins, Landon Smith, Jayden Smith and Hailey Smith; three great grandchildren, Brooklyn Willis, Eden Willis and McKenzie Smith; among other loved ones and dear friends.
His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Monday, August 19 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Ron Cooke officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Smith Cemetery at Crane Nest with military funeral honors.
Casket bearers will be Hunter Griffith, Billy Elliott, Ted Hobbs, Chris Winkler, Michael Phipps and Timothy Willis. Serving as honorary bearers will be his grandchildren.
Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday between 6 and 9 P.M. and Monday prior to the funeral hour.
