Mr. Elmer Smith, 94, of Milan, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville, IN. He was born on March 12, 1929 in Knox County, the son of John and Nannie Jones Smith.

He married his late wife Verna Swafford Smith on October 9, 1948 and she preceded him in death on July 1, 2009.

Mr. Smith was a proud farmer as well as a former employee of Chrysler and Hill-Rom. He enjoyed being active, tending to his garden, going for long bike rides and tending to his lawn.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his siblings, William Smith, Martha Smith Mills, Beve Clark “B. C.” Smith, Anderson Smith and Dexter Smith.

Survivors include three daughters, Doris and Mark Cook of Sunman, Darlene and Timothy Aust of Holland, PA and Arlene and Victor Lee of Cortlandt Manor, NY; siblings, Susan and Orville Warren, Louisa  Crawford, Annabell and Bob Lewis, Bernice and Bob Tillman, Reed and Syreda Smith, Richard and Ethel Smith and John and Debbie Smith; grandchildren, Dana and Scott Burton, Mitchell and Madeline Lee, Caroline Aust and Jason Cook; a great-grandchild, Claire Burton; his favorite cat, Stormy; among other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service will be held at the Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home in Milan, IN Saturday, September 16 at 1 P.M. with Pastor Terry Canfield officiating.  Burial will follow in the New Craven Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home Saturday after 11:30 A.M. until the funeral hour.

Flowers may be received at the funeral home or memorials may be given in honor of Elmer to the Donor’s Choice.

The only stipulation that Elmer has for his funeral was, “Don’t bury me in a suit.” He’s not dressing up for you, so there’s no need for you to dress up for him!
