Mrs. Josephine Lucy Sanders, 89, of Swan Lake, passed away Friday morning, August 9, 2024 at her home.  She was born on December 29, 1934 at Woodbine, the daughter of the late Henry and Bernice McFarland Gray.

Josephine was a devoted homemaker who embraced her faith in the Baptist church.  She had the ability to nurture and care for others, serving as a loving foster parent to many children and volunteered with KCEOC and the Head Start program, making a positive impact in her community.  Josephine also enjoyed sewing, canning, gardening and was known to be a jack of all trades.

On February 26, 1954, she united in marriage with Eugene Sanders, who preceded her in death.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sisters, Sue Hinkle, Ann Simpson and Helen Gray and brothers, Curt, James, Doc and Henry Gray.

Survivors include her dearly loved children, Glennis Eugene Sanders and DeDe Sanders both of Barbourville, Alice Parker of Corbin, Carl David Sanders of Barbourville, Melissa Jean Sanders of Corbin, Latosha Jo Murray of Barbourville and Sunshine Faith Sanders of Texas; sisters, June Sharp of Corbin, Joy West of Williamsburg, Victoria Gray, Little Jo Gray and Andrea Gray all of Barbourville; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; among other loved ones and dear friends.

Her funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Thursday, August 15 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Dr. Bobby Drew Lawson officiating.  She will be laid to rest in the Sanders – Israel Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be family and friends.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Thursday after 12 Noon until the funeral hour.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
