Mrs. Marie Root, 93, departed this life on April 4, 2020 surrounded with family at her bedside. She was the daughter of the late Loyd and Stacy Grubb Hammons born on March 26, 1927 in Knox County.
Marie was a life-long member of the Horn Branch Baptist Church. She loved the Lord, her family and friends, sewing, quilting and talking on the telephone.
On August 8, 1943, she united in marriage with Fount Root and to this union four children were born.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fount; three sisters, Martha, Mary and Nettie; two brothers, Earl and Elmer and two great grandchildren, Jeffrey Allen Dunn II and Ambria Dunn.
Survivors include her loving children, Bonnie Dunn and husband, Rev. Alvin Dunn, of Cannon, Darlene Frost and husband, Donnie Ray, of Knoxville, TN, James Loyd Root and fiancé, Bonnie Smith, of Woollum and Barbara Bargo and husband, Ted, of Barbourville; a sister, Belle Smith of Corbin; a brother, Larry Hammons and wife, Judy, of Cannon; a brother-in-law, George Root of Cannon; two sisters-in-law, Eula Fern Hammons of Wayne, MI and Jeanette Sue Hammons of Lexington; adopted children by love, Glennis, Gwen and Jenny McFarland; 20 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; 16 great-great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins; among other loved ones, dear friends and church family.
A private family funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Thursday, April 9 with Rev. Jerry Vaughn, Rev. Alvin Dunn and Rev. Jeffrey Dunn officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Hammons Cemetery at Green Road.
Casket bearers will be her grandsons. Honorary bearers will be Dr. James West, Dr. Raju Vora and Melanie Dykes, PA, Dr. Talmadge Hays, Bluegrass Hospice Care, Rev. Johnny Shell and members of the Horn Branch Baptist Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
