Mr. Larry E. Mills, 73, of Bimble, passed away Tuesday morning, March 31, 2020 at his home. He was the son of the late Reed and Mary Ruth Mayo Mills born on December 28, 1946 in Knox County.
Mr. Mills had a career expanding over 45 years in education including teaching, coaching, serving as principal at both Barbourville Independent and Lynn Camp High Schools and most recently as an Americorp Partner where he tutored math at Knox Central High School. He was also a proficient carpenter. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church Barbourville where he served as deacon and taught Sunday School. Larry enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters and doing odd jobs with his best friend, Harry. He also loved watching Kentucky basketball, solving algebra problems and drinking Diet Coke. He had the biggest sweet tooth, especially when it came to fudge, pound cake and ice cream, but would never admit it. We will probably never meet another person that is good at everything like he was. It drove us all crazy that he was always right and we don’t know what we will do now without his wisdom and skills. Larry spent his very last day doing what he loved. He worked painting and putting in hardwood floors and then bought himself a new push mower. On August 30, 1968, he united in marriage with Linda Gayle Jordan. Our hearts are truly at peace knowing He is reunited with his soul mate in Glory after a long six years on Earth without her.
Survivors include his two dearly loved sons, Darren Mills and wife, Loretta, of Swan Pond and Devin Mills and wife, Lynn, of Bimble; two brothers, Mike Mills and wife, Jane, of Bimble and Terry Mills and wife, Lorri, of Lexington; a sister-in-law, Joyce Jordan Delozier of Barbourville; a brother-in-law, James Victor Jordan and wife, Tommie Sue, of London; three beautiful granddaughters, Abigail, Jada and Bryleigh; two step-grandchildren, Kirstin and Austin; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; two very dear and close friends, Harry Mays and wife, Opal; among other loved ones and dear friends.
A private family funeral service will be conducted the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Sunday, April 5 with Rev. Alan Dodson and Rev. Dennis Chesnut officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery.
A public celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
