Mr. Virgil Hammons, 78, of Callebs Creek, passed away Monday evening, April 27, 2020 at St. Joseph London.  He was the son of the late Madison and Dottie Robinson Hammons born on May 14, 1941 in Knox County.

Virgil was a former machine technician with Chrysler, a member of the Dripping Springs Baptist Church, he was a Past Master of Mountain Lodge 187 F & AM, 32ND Degree Scottish Rite, Oleika Shrine Temple, Barbourville Eastern Star, the 12th Man Club at Knox Central and a former UAW office and Knox County Health Department board member.  He faithfully served his country in the United States Army. He enjoyed attending church, was an avid UK basketball fan and loved spending time with family, friends and his two dogs, Tayson and Asia.  Virgil had many friends with whom he loved to socialize and enjoyed smoking fine cigars.

On June 12, 1971, he united in marriage with Esselene Callebs in Knox County.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Glendale Hammons, Preston Hammons and Damon Moore.

Survivors include his loving wife, Esselene Hammons of Callebs Creek; a daughter, Nicole Bohlen, of Cincinnati, OH; two sisters, Brenda Wagner of Corbin and Wilda Moore and husband, Malcolm, of Hamilton, OH; two brothers, Bill Hammons and wife, Janie, of Hamilton, OH and James Hammons and wife, Sherry, of Blanchester, OH; a brother-in-law, Columbus Hensley of Corbin; two sisters-in-law, Audrey Callebs of Kent, OH and Greta Callebs of Barbourville; several nieces and nephews; among other loved ones and dear friends.

A private family funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Saturday, May 2 with Rev. Ricky Broughton and Rev. Steven Honeycutt officiating.  He will be laid to rest in the Callebs Creek Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Adam Callebs, Cody Smith, Devin Smith, Bill Cole, Dallas Barnes, Russell Hammons and Rodney Moore.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
