HAMMONS, Elsie Jackson (1922 – 2019)

Mrs. Elsie Jackson Hammons, 97, of Flat Lick, away Monday afternoon, June 10, 2019 at the Barbourville ARH Hospital.  She was the daughter of the late Daw and Rebecca Bingham Jackson born on May 25, 1922 in Knox County.

Mrs. Hammons was a homemaker and a member of the Salt Gum Baptist Church.

Elsie and her first husband, Roy Hampton, were united in marriage on June 22, 1941.  He was killed in France during World War II on July 31, 1944.  On May 8, 1950, she united in marriage with Earl Hammons.  They lived a loving life of 69 years together until he passed away on January 13, 2011.  Elsie was a devoted and loving mother of six children.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by two children, Paulette Hansford, on December 15, 2015 and Larry Hammons on October 18, 2010 and several brothers and sisters, Latimore Jackson and wife, Bessie, Clell Jackson and wife, Edna, John Jackson and wife, Bessie, Axie Lester and husband, Hubert, Betty Williams and husband, Jim, Arthur Jackson and wife, Dorothy, Obie Jackson and wife, Amanda, Mae Taylor and husband, Ben, Oscar Jackson and wife, Cleo, Sudie Smith and husband, Smiddy, and Trudy Brandenesio and husband, Arthur.

Survivors include her children, Susie Norfleet and husband, Oscar, of Loveland, OH, Gerry Lynn Brown and husband, Bill, of Flat Lick, Gloria Jean Carmack and husband, Paul, of Bimble and Earl Hammons Jr. and wife, Karen, of Barbourville; a daughter-in-law, Mary Hammons of Flat Lick and a son-in-law, Gary Hansford of Bellbrook, OH.  She also enjoyed the company of her nine grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren.

Her funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Saturday, June 15 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Kennon Roark officiating.  She will be laid to rest in the Binghamtown Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Howard Finley Taylor, Frank Brown, Brian Carey, Marshall Holbrook, Benjamin Hammons, Jeffery Scott Gray, Jason Carmack, Chris Collett and John Pickard.  Serving as honorary bearers will be Randy Mills, Bruce Walker, Robert Cooper, Bige Warren, Gerald Bingham, Denny Bingham and Michael Walker.

The family would like to express their appreciation to our friends who helped take care of Mother each day.  Their loving attention helped our mother have better and more enjoyable days.  Many thanks to Ruth Carnes, Pat Messer, Ethel Baker, Tiffany Baker and our cousin, Joyce Catoe.

Our mother and father travelled to many churches during the time of his ministry for many years.  As a pastor’s wife, she met and made many friendships in many communities.  During their last years of life, they were members of the Salt Gum Baptist Church.  Mother enjoyed the friendship of all members and loved them all.  We wish to thank Pastor Kennon Roark and the members of the Salt Gum Baptist Church for their love and support.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday between 6 and 9 P.M. and Saturday prior to the funeral hour.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
