GREGORY, Harold C. (1939 – 2019)

Mr. Harold Clifford Gregory, 80, of the Walker community of Stinking Creek in Knox County, passed away Thursday afternoon, June 27, 2019 at his home.  He was the son of the late John Tilman and Ruth Martin Gregory born on January 8, 1939 at Heidrick.

Harold was a retired schoolteacher from Dewitt Elementary School where he and his wife, Maxola, taught and dearly loved the students.  They used teaching methods that are still being used in many schools today.  He was a graduate of Union College with a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degree in education and also obtained an administration degree from Eastern Kentucky University.  He faithfully served his country in the United States Air Force and the Kentucky Army National Guard.  He was a Kentucky Colonel and a strong member of the Democratic Party.  Mr. Gregory served as a tutor at Dewitt Elementary School and attended ballgames at Dewitt, Knox Central, Barbourville and Union College to show his support for the young people of the area.  He attended the Dewitt Baptist Church and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

On February 10, 1962, he united in marriage with Maxola Carnes and to this union two children were born.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 46 years, Maxola; a sister and her husband, Roberta and John Rhoades; three brothers, William N., Edward A. and John G. Gregory and a brother-in-law, Lowell Ted Stewart.

Survivors include two sons, Dr. Harold Clif Gregory and wife, Tracy, of Lexington and Anthony Kevin Gregory and Kathy Hubbard of Scalf; four grandchildren, Jonathan, Ethan and Duncan Gregory and Madalyn Chambers and husband, Ryan; a great granddaughter, Emma; a sister, Edith Gwen Stewart of Middletown, OH, who was a great companion in his later years; three sisters-in-law, Orma Gregory of Murfreesboro, TN, Edith Gregory of Barbourville and Nancy Gregory of Wyoming, MI; several nieces and nephews; among other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Monday, July 1 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Donnie Mills, Rev. Derrick Mills and Rev. Bo Henson officiating.  He will be laid to rest in the Green Carnes Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Jonathan Gregory, Ethan Gregory, Duncan Gregory, Jeff Canady, Donnie “Doc” Gray, Ed “Papa” Smith, Matt Gregory, Randy Gregory, Larry Hensley and Ryan Chambers.  Honorary bearers will be his nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors, former students and men and women who he coached as youngsters in football, basketball, track, baseball and swimming.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday between 6 and 9 P.M. and Monday prior to the funeral hour.

Expressions of sympathy may go to the church or charity of one’s choice in his memory.
