Mrs. Betty Sue McVey Bowling, 79, of Barbourville, passed away Monday afternoon, October 24, 2022 at The Willows at Harrodsburg.  Betty was born in Berea on April 12, 1943 to the late Manervia Sowders and John McVey. Betty attended Union College and EKU to obtain a bachelor’s, a master’s degree in education and then her Rank 1 certification.

She went on to teach elementary education, mostly third grade, until her retirement. By all accounts, she put so much love and attention to all of her students, many of whom had so very little. She made many great friends over the years, who have checked in on her often.

Betty raised two children, Christy Carlsen and husband, Greg, and Keith Bowling II.  She was a much beloved grandmother to her four grandchildren, Brennen, Grant and Matilyn Carlsen and Ella Bowling.

In addition to her aforementioned children and grandchildren, Betty is survived by sisters, Venna Corey and Wilma Hall and a brother, Johnny McVey and wife, Billie Jo.

She was preceded in her death by parents, Manervia and John McVey as well as her husband, Keith Bowling and brothers-in-law, Curt Corey and Tommy Hall.

Her funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Monday, October 31 at 1 P.M. with J. D. McVey officiating.  She will be laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Keith Bowling, Kevin Patterson, Michael Nunley, Greg Carlsen, Brennan Carlsen, Grant Carlsen, John McVey III and Curtie Corey.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday between 6 and 8 P.M. and Monday prior to the funeral hour.
