
Mrs. JoAnn Alford, 81, of Barbourville, passed away Monday morning, January 26, 2026 at her home. She was born April 4, 1944 in Knox County, the daughter of the late James and Nellie Smith Powell.
JoAnn was a former schoolteacher and believed in the Baptist faith. She not only cared for her family, but she also loved caring for her students and served as a foster parent. She also loved the simple things in life, watching Hallmark movies, working crossword puzzles and shopping for clothes. JoAnn was also a seamstress and provider to her nieces, nephews and other family members.
On December 17, 1970, she united in marriage with Claude “Jack” Alford in Barbourville, who preceded her in death.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Cathrine Powell Bohnam, Drucilla Powell Jackson, D. W., Wendell, James, Jerry, Leslie, David and Gorman Powell.
Survivors include her daughter, Melissa Alford Baum and husband, Douglas, of Barbourville; grandchildren, Tucker Baum and George Douglas Baum; several nieces and nephews; among other loved ones and dear friend who will cherish her memory.
Her funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Wednesday, February 4 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Samuel Lawson officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery.
Casket bearers will be Brandon Williamson, Corey Williamson, Kris Mills and Chris Powell.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Wednesday after 12 Noon until the funeral hour.
