Mr. Johnny “J. J.” Mason Jr., 51, of Middlesboro, passed away Saturday afternoon, July 12, 2025 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.  He was born July 1, 1974 in Pineville, the son of Helen Mason Smith and the late Johnny Mason.

J. J. was a welder and a member of One Church of Barbourville, rooted in the Pentecostal faith. Gifted with a natural musical talent, he could play nearly any instrument he picked up and performed with both gospel and bluegrass bands.  J. J. had a deep appreciation for the outdoors; he found joy in camping, fishing and hiking. One of his accomplishments was hiking the Appalachian Trail in sections.

On November 10, 2018, he united in marriage with Angela Cupp in Pineville.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by grandparents, Orville and Margie Mason and Manuel and Opal Gray.

Survivors include his loving wife, Angela Mason of Middlesboro; mother, Helen Mason Smith and husband, Virgil, of Flat Lick; children, Megan Cummings and husband, Jeff, of Anthony, FL, Courtney Sparks and husband, Preston, of Jacksonville, FL, Austin Snowden and Ryan Snowden both of Middlesboro; a sister, Sheila Kay Browning and husband, Kevin, of Flat Lick; brothers, Mark Smith and wife, Amanda, of Gray and Darrel Smith and wife, Susie, of Hinkle; grandchildren, Alexi Grace and Harper Ann Cummings and Xylia and Keaden Snowden; special friends, George Anglin and Dave Ashworth; among other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Saturday, July 19 at 1 P.M. with Rev. Glenn Hickey and Rev. Bill Engle officiating.  He will be laid the rest in the Hammons Cemetery at Flat Lick.

Casket bearers will be George Anglin, Brandon Gray, Jason Bradford, Matthew Teague, Eric Gray and Ryan Snowden.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Friday between 6 and 9 P.M. and Saturday prior to the funeral hour.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
