
Mr. Vernon T. Glasscock, 97, of Ormond Beach, FL, passed away Monday, November 3, 2025 at the Advent Health Dayton Beach. He was born November 30, 1927 in Barbourville, the son of the late Jesse and Gertha Parker Glasscock.
Vernon graduated from Knox Central High School in May 1945. He then went to Toledo, Ohio and worked during the summer at the American Propeller Corporation, which manufactured propellers for the airplanes used in WWII. In the spring of 1946, he entered the Army. Vernon attained the rank of Technician Fourth Grade Sergeant. He faithfully served in Italy with the occupational troops until all draftees were discharged.
He enrolled at Union College and graduated in 1950. He soon married Neva Hammons, and to this union two children were born.
After marriage, Vernon worked as a teacher at Trace Branch Elementary School for three years. He then took a job with the state of Kentucky as a field worker for public assistance. After three years, he moved to Michigan and took a job as a secondary teacher for the East Detroit Public School District. He also worked part-time in real estate while teaching for 12 years. During that time, he enrolled at Wayne State University and received a Master’s Degree in Education in 1961. After 28 years of teaching in Michigan, he retired.
Vernon has been blessed to enjoy his life in retirement for nearly 40 years. For the past 35 years, he resided in Ormond Beach, Florida. His passions included sports and the occasional game of slots. He lived completely independently in his own home until his death. He was loved by his neighbors, friends, and family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Michael Glasscock in May 2009, sisters, Pauline Hammond and husband, A. J., and Ruth Patterson and husband, Ralph.
Vernon is survived by his loving daughter, Patricia Ann Drake and husband, Mark, of Michigan; grandchildren, Matthew M. Drake and wife, Jessica, of Michigan and Megan Stillman and husband, Mark, of Maine.
His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Wednesday, November 12 at 1 P.M. with Rev. Thom Brown officiating. Military funeral honors will follow the service. He will be laid to rest in the Glasscock Cemetery.
Friends may visit at the funeral home Wednesday after 11 A.M. until the funeral hour.
